How to Retain the Best Employees (Part 1)

If you’re looking to learn how to retain the best employees for your team, this is the first of a three part series on how some of the great industry leaders are facing the challenge.

Both Microsoft and Shake Shack represent great modern brands within their own sectors. While their day-to-day operation and working environment couldn’t be more different, their leaders stand together on a single point.

Today it’s harder than ever to keep top performing employees. There are so many opportunities, and a lot of competition in terms of salaries. So innovative organizations are looking for more creative ways to retain their talent.

The Four Day Work Week.

The retail resturant chain and corporate office environments that Microsoft and Shake Shack operate have each shown success when implementing a four day work week.

In fact, that extra day of rest for their staff has resulted in a boost in production. More relaxed and rested workers perform better, and the extra flexibility of planing for 3 days off every week goes a long way to retaining those workers long term.

This means more people will come to you looking for work, they’ll want to stay working for your company long term, and they’ll be happier. As more companies adopt this strategy, the traditional 40-hour work week is showing its age.

That eight hours a day, five days a week, working schedule was created in a different time, with different working environments, and a totally different society. Today, people appreciate freedom and flexibility.

This Week’s Take Away

Additional rest, flexibility, and freedom are things not every company offers. Implementing a four day work week at your organization can bring back that competitive edge when hiring, while also improving the lives of your employees. Planning on a build in 3 day weekend, or the ability to choose an extra day of rest, means your staff will be talking more about build a long term career.

If you’re looking to attract the best employees, or increase production, get flexible with your scheduling. Even if you can’t implement the four-day work week, look for other areas where you can add some flexibility and freedom for your workers.

It’s something that both Microsoft and Shake Shack are winning with, in two different working environments. I think it’s worth a shot to try it in your business.
