What Are Effective Leadership Skills?

How do you lead well and make your company culture awesome? More importantly, how can you as a leader get your employees do what you want them to?

Leadership is a skillset that’s like a muscle. You don’t have to be born with it, and leaders aren’t only those select individuals who are exclusively gifted for the role. Instead it’s a practice that you need to continuously work on, developing muscle memory that keeps you growing stronger.

Leaders Are Constantly Under Construction

Donald Miller who runs Business Made Simple publishes some great short daily videos Monday through Friday that have great business advice— in one of those two minute clips he said everyone wants to know where we are going (which he repeats several times). His point is that as a leader you need to continuously repeat your vision and purpose.

This means developing what it looks like for you and your business to be winning. As an effective leader you should have an answer ready when your employees wonder what it is that makes them get up to come to work every morning.

Yes, your team is looking forward to their paycheck but as we’ve discussed before that type of singular motivation isn’t the best approach to get the most out of people. The most important skill you need to develop as an effective leader is to tell your employees where they are going. What is the vision, and what is the purpose; this needs to be simple, clear to comprehend, and above all you need to repeat it.

Unify Your Team with a Clear Direction

When your team knows where they’re going, what they have to do to get there, and why it matters then they can come in to the office with purpose. This translates to motivation and improved performance... which isn’t wasted effort because your clearly defined vision has set everyone on an established track towards success.

That is how you can get your employees to do what you want them to do. Having a clear direction will give them a sense of ownership to their part in the company’s progression, leading to a positive culture. The singular act of developing and distributing this vision of where you’re going is something that effective leaders do well.

This Week’s Take Away

Where are you going in your business? Write it down. This doesn’t have to be a grand vision statement, or something that gets painted onto a wall. It can be simple, like a particular endeavor, metric, goal, or an impact you need to make on a group of people or community.

Once you have it written down, start communicating it to your team— and repeat it over and over again. Your employees need to know where you are going. Keep up this practice not just for this week, but for every week moving foward. When done right, it will work to unify your team and take their production to a whole new level.

Don’t forget that when you get there, celebrate and have fun with your team.
